Your pet has been recommended for surgery. You may be weighing the expected benefits, recovery, possible alternatives and a substantial estimate. Asking another veterinarian to review the case is a reasonable way to understand your options.
At Broadway Vet in Newmarket, we welcome enquiries from owners who have already received a surgical recommendation or estimate. Our team can review the available information, assess whether the case is suitable for our facilities and explain the next steps.
When is a second opinion worth considering?
A second opinion may confirm the original plan or identify another clinically appropriate path.
A significant surgical estimate
Understand what you are paying for, what is included and which costs may vary.
A recommendation for specialist referral
Find out whether the procedure requires a specialist or may be suitable at a general veterinary practice.
Uncertainty about treatment options
Discuss the benefits, limitations and potential alternatives for your pet's diagnosis.
Questions about risk and recovery
Clarify anaesthesia, pain relief, aftercare and expected follow-up.
What might be included in a surgical estimate?
A surgical estimate covers more than the operation itself. Before comparing figures, check which of the following are included.
Pre-operative assessment
Examination, blood tests and any additional diagnostic investigations
Imaging & surgical planning
X-rays, ultrasound or other scans when indicated
Anaesthesia & monitoring
Anaesthetic medicines, trained monitoring and patient support
The surgical procedure
The operation, theatre resources and necessary supplies
Medication & hospital care
Pain relief, treatment medicines and any hospitalisation
Recovery & follow-up
Wound care, review appointments and possible extra treatments
Comparing only the final dollar amount
Comparing treatment, monitoring, inclusions and follow-up
These are examples of possible cost components, not a fixed package or price list. The actual estimate depends on the patient and procedure.
What surgery can Broadway Vet assess?
We assess routine surgery and selected soft-tissue, abdominal and orthopaedic cases. Depending on the pet, this may include suitable wound repairs, mass removal, bladder or gastrointestinal procedures and certain fracture or orthopaedic conditions.
Some suitable procedures may have a more economical option at our clinic than a specialist referral estimate. However, we will recommend referral when a case needs specialist expertise, advanced equipment, intensive care or overnight monitoring that cannot appropriately be provided at our practice.
How to request an assessment
- 1
Send what you have
Email your pet's history, the proposed operation and any existing estimate, test results or images.
- 2
Initial veterinary review
Our team will assess whether we can review the case and whether an examination or further tests are needed.
- 3
Discuss a suitable plan
We can explain possible treatment, likely cost components, risks and the next steps once enough information is available.
What should I include in my email?
You don't need everything to make an initial enquiry. Existing records can make the review more useful.
- Pet's species, breed, age and approximate weight
- Diagnosis or the operation recommended by the original vet
- Clinical notes, referral letter or medical history
- Existing surgical estimate, if provided
- Relevant blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound or reports
- Your contact details and any timing concerns
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to repeat previous tests?
Not always. We will consider whether earlier results are sufficiently recent and relevant. If your pet's condition has changed, more testing may be necessary.
Can you give a firm quote from a photo of another clinic's estimate?
We can use it as a starting point, but an accurate estimate for a complex case may require medical records, an examination or additional investigations.
Will Broadway Vet always be cheaper?
No. For selected suitable procedures our estimate may be lower, but differences in medical services and patient needs must be considered.
Will requesting a second opinion transfer my pet's care?
No. You can discuss the findings with your regular veterinarian and decide where ongoing care should take place.
Already received a surgical recommendation or quote?
Email Broadway Vet's reception with your pet's details and the information you have. We'll help you understand the appropriate next step. Consultation or additional test fees will be explained before proceeding.
