Case selection and safety come before an operating date.
Each pet's needs are different. Your vet will recommend assessment and treatment based on their individual circumstances.
Understand the underlying condition
An examination, blood tests and imaging may be needed to investigate vomiting, abdominal pain, urinary signs or reproductive problems.
Assess urgency and stabilisation
Intestinal obstruction and uterine infection can be serious. A patient may require urgent support or transfer before any planned procedure.
Discuss the procedure and alternatives
Depending on the diagnosis, options may include surgery, further diagnostics or referral. Not every abdominal operation is available at our clinic.
Review anaesthesia and surgical risks
The vet will explain risk factors, anticipated anaesthesia and monitoring, possible complications and how the team plans to manage them.
Understand the estimate
Ask what is included for diagnostics, operation, anaesthesia, medicines, hospital care, pathology and rechecks. Additional findings may change the final cost.
Plan post-operative care
Recovery arrangements depend on the operation. Cases needing intensive care or overnight monitoring may require a referral hospital.
Before, during and after your visit
Send existing records for a case review
If another vet has recommended abdominal surgery, send the history, laboratory and imaging results and any estimate. We can advise whether an assessment at Broadway Vet is appropriate, but cannot quote or accept every procedure sight unseen.
An urgent problem must not wait for price shopping
Repeated unproductive vomiting, a distended painful abdomen, collapse or a suspected uterine infection can be dangerous. Please seek immediate veterinary attention when these signs arise.
Compare the full surgical pathway
When discussing estimates, check diagnostics, anaesthetic monitoring, operating time, post-operative care, medicines, pathology and whether an overnight referral could be needed. We may offer an alternative for selected suitable cases, not a like-for-like substitute for all specialist care.
Services, suitability and costs differ by species and clinical circumstances. Your veterinarian will confirm a plan for your pet.
Frequently asked questions
Can Broadway Vet perform foreign-body or pyometra surgery?
We assess selected suitable cases. Availability depends on the diagnosis, stability, procedure, clinician and facilities. Some pets should be managed at an emergency or specialist hospital.
Can I request an alternative estimate after a referral?
Yes. Share the previous records and estimate; an examination or additional tests may be necessary before we can assess suitability and provide our own quote.
Is abdominal surgery always safe for a healthy-looking pet?
No. Anaesthesia and operations always carry risk, and an animal can have serious illness despite appearing stable. We explain important risks before consent.
Understand your options before deciding
Before consenting, please ask your vet about the procedure, important risks, possible additional tests and expected charges.
